Morocco continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup journey with a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada on Saturday, booking a place in the quarterfinals while ending Canada’s historic campaign.
A brilliant second-half brace from Azzedine Ounahi and a stoppage-time strike from substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed an impressive win for the Atlas Lions in Houston. The victory also made Morocco the first African nation to reach the World Cup quarterfinals on more than one occasion, following their historic run to the semifinals in Qatar four years ago.
Despite the convincing scoreline, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch refused to believe his side had been outplayed.
Marsch: “I’d Rather Be Us Than Them”
Speaking after the match, an emotional Marsch praised his players for their fearless approach, insisting Canada deserved more from the contest.
“What a privilege our fans have had to support a team like this,” Marsch said. “A team that attacks the game, doesn’t sit back, and believes it can compete with anyone.”
The Canadian boss maintained that his team controlled large portions of the match, particularly before halftime.
“I’d rather be us than them. As good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us,” he added. “Our players are hurting, but I couldn’t be prouder.”
Canada created several excellent chances during a dominant opening 45 minutes. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi both came close to giving the hosts the lead, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced several outstanding saves to keep the game level.
Marsch believes those missed opportunities proved costly.
“We should have been ahead in the first half. We had 11 incredible performances across the pitch. Sometimes football comes down to the smallest details.”
Morocco Punish Canada’s Missed Chances
After surviving Canada’s early pressure, Morocco showed exactly why they are regarded as one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
The breakthrough arrived five minutes into the second half from a cleverly designed free kick. Rather than crossing into the penalty area, Achraf Hakimi rolled the ball to Azzedine Ounahi on the edge of the box, and the midfielder calmly swept his finish into the bottom corner.
As Canada pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, Morocco struck again on the counterattack in the 82nd minute. Brahim Díaz picked out Ounahi, who powered his shot high into the net to double the lead.
Substitute Soufiane Rahimi completed the rout deep into stoppage time, sliding home Morocco’s third goal after another devastating breakaway.
Ouahbi Rejects Marsch’s Assessment
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi disagreed with Marsch’s claim that Canada had been the better side.
“In terms of intensity, Canada played well,” Ouahbi admitted. “But were they better? It’s difficult to say that after losing 3-0. We controlled the second half and deserved the result.”
The victory continues Morocco’s rise as one of world football’s emerging powers.
“We are no longer a surprise,” Ouahbi said. “People now see Morocco as a serious contender. It’s a great source of pride, but we don’t want to stop here.”
Bounou Delivers Another Masterclass
While Ounahi grabbed the headlines with two goals, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved invaluable.
The experienced shot-stopper frustrated Canada throughout the opening half, producing several key saves, including an excellent stop to deny Tani Oluwaseyi after the striker turned sharply inside the box.
Bounou, who was born in Canada to Moroccan parents, reflected proudly on another famous victory.
“We are proud to represent Africa because this continent has enormous football talent. Africa deserves to compete at the highest level.”
Alphonso Davies Misses Out
Canada were also without star full-back Alphonso Davies, who failed to recover from a hamstring issue.
Marsch revealed Davies had been progressing well before suffering a minor setback in training.
“He was recovering on schedule until two days ago when he felt something again. Thankfully it wasn’t serious, but we didn’t want to take any risks.”
Canada’s Historic Run Ends
Although disappointment filled the Canadian camp, the tournament still represents the nation’s finest World Cup performance.
After previous group-stage exits in 1986 and 2022, the co-hosts reached the knockout rounds for the first time and earned their first-ever World Cup knockout victory by defeating South Africa to reach the Round of 16.
Their adventurous style won admirers throughout the tournament, even if their lack of finishing ultimately proved costly against one of the competition’s most clinical sides.

The Atlas Lions now advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Paraguay and France.
