Switzerland have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown with Colombia, with rising star Johan Manzambi officially ruled out through injury.
The talented 20-year-old midfielder, who has been one of Switzerland’s standout performers in the tournament, will miss Tuesday’s knockout fixture in Vancouver after suffering an injury during preparations.
Injury Worries Hit Swiss Camp
Manzambi was among three Swiss players forced to leave training early on Monday as the team completed its final session before facing Colombia. The other two players, Ruben Vargas and Djibril Sow, were later cleared and are expected to be available from the bench.
Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin admitted the team would have to cope without one of its brightest performers.
“This is going to be a very big loss,” Yakin said. “But this is football. You always have to adjust until the very last minute.”
Manzambi’s Breakout Tournament Comes to a Halt
Manzambi has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Initially starting the tournament as a substitute, the young midfielder quickly became one of Switzerland’s most influential players.
He has scored three goals and provided two assists in just four appearances. His defining moment came against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he came off the bench to score twice in a sensational 19-minute cameo that announced his arrival on the world stage.
His impressive performances earned him a place in the starting lineup by Switzerland’s third group-stage match against Canada, and he has since become a key figure in the team’s midfield.

The loss of Manzambi adds to Switzerland’s growing injury concerns.
Defender Luca Jaquez and midfielder Michel Aebischer are also struggling with fitness issues.
Jaquez featured against Canada but was unavailable for Switzerland’s Round of 32 victory over Algeria. Meanwhile, Aebischer has seen limited action after starting the team’s opening two matches, managing only brief substitute appearances in the knockout stages.

Colombia Also Facing Selection Problems
Colombia head into the match with injury concerns of their own.
Striker Jhon Córdoba has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after suffering a muscle tear, depriving the South Americans of one of their attacking threats.
In addition, a virus recently spread through the Colombian camp, although head coach Néstor Lorenzo insists the situation is now under control.
“We were hit by a virus, but we’re all doing pretty well,” Lorenzo said.

Despite both teams dealing with injury setbacks, the stakes could not be higher.
Switzerland and Colombia will battle for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals, where tournament favorites Argentina national football team await the winner.
With Manzambi unavailable, Switzerland will need others to step up if they hope to continue their impressive World Cup journey.
