Brighton Beat Manchester City 1-0 as Yasin Ayari Secures Premier League Victory

Brighton delivered an impressive performance to claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, getting revenge for their midweek Carabao Cup disappointment against the Premier League champions.

Yasin Ayari emerged as the match-winner, scoring an early goal to make up for his penalty miss in Wednesday’s shoot-out defeat at the Etihad Stadium. His decisive finish also fulfilled Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler’s pre-match determination to get a positive result against Pep Guardiola’s side.

The defeat represents City’s second consecutive loss in the Premier League, a worrying development for a team that began the season with seven straight victories.

The result also presents Arsenal with an opportunity to move above City in the standings when they face Liverpool on Sunday.

Brighton, meanwhile, will be delighted with their response after suffering disappointment in the Carabao Cup and losing to Liverpool in the league last weekend. Having remained in the Manchester area following Wednesday’s encounter, Hürzeler’s players made their trip worthwhile by securing all three points.

Despite facing considerable pressure in the closing stages, the Seagulls held on to move within two points of the top of the Premier League table.

Ayari Makes Amends as Brighton Take Early Lead

Both teams returned with stronger line-ups after making several changes for their midweek cup meeting. However, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca made some notable selection decisions, leaving Marc Guéhi out of the starting eleven following his recent struggles.

Maresca also selected Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández together in midfield, while in-form attacking players Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden started on the bench.

Brighton wasted little time making their intentions clear and took the lead in the 11th minute.

Lewis Dunk, who had also missed a penalty in Wednesday’s shoot-out, played an excellent ball down the right from a free-kick to release Diego Gómez. Matheus Nunes failed to intercept Gómez’s low delivery, which took a fortunate deflection off Maxim De Cuyper and fell perfectly for Ayari.

The midfielder made no mistake from close range, calmly finding the back of the net to give Brighton an early advantage.

City responded by increasing their attacking pressure, with Iliman Ndiaye looking particularly dangerous. The Senegal international had a golden opportunity to equalise after being picked out by Anderson, but his header drifted wide despite goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen being beaten.

Ndiaye continued to trouble Brighton’s defence with his pace and movement. He later forced Verbruggen into action following an impressive individual run and delivered a dangerous low cross that appeared to strike Dunk’s hand inside the penalty area. However, referee Craig Pawson allowed play to continue.

Verbruggen Keeps City at Bay

Brighton had an opportunity to extend their advantage shortly after the restart when De Cuyper fired over the crossbar.

Manchester City gradually took control of the contest as they searched for an equaliser, putting Brighton’s defensive organisation under increasing pressure.

Ndiaye came close once again, unleashing a powerful effort that Verbruggen brilliantly tipped onto the post. The goalkeeper remained busy moments later when the winger attempted to create an opportunity for Erling Haaland, but Luka Vuskovic intervened to clear the danger.

City players also appealed for a back-pass after Verbruggen gathered the ball, but Pawson once again dismissed their protests.

Matheus Nunes tested the Brighton goalkeeper with another effort, while Ndiaye suffered further frustration when he fired into the side-netting after receiving a pass from Nico O’Reilly.

Brighton struggled to threaten consistently as the second half progressed, with Georginio Rutter’s effort wide of the target offering one of their few attacking moments during City’s sustained pressure.

The visitors remained disciplined defensively, however, refusing to allow the hosts an easy route back into the match.

Brighton Hold Firm to Complete Revenge

Manchester City continued pushing for an equaliser in the closing stages, with O’Reilly and Cherki both coming close to finding the net.

However, Brighton’s defence remained organised, and Verbruggen’s impressive performance helped the Seagulls protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The 1-0 victory was a significant response to their Carabao Cup disappointment and another reminder of Brighton’s ability to compete against the Premier League’s strongest teams.

For City, the defeat raises further questions after consecutive league losses following their excellent start to the campaign.

Brighton will now take confidence from an important away victory, while Arsenal have an opportunity to capitalise on City’s latest setback when they face Liverpool.Brighton Beat Manchester City 1-0 as Yasin Ayari Secures Premier League Victory
