Lionel Messi Leads Inter Miami to 2-0 Win Over Portland Timbers

Inter Miami finally gave their fans something to celebrate at Nu Stadium, and once again, it was Lionel Messi leading the way. The Argentine superstar scored, created another, and controlled the rhythm of the match as the Herons cruised to a composed 2-0 victory over Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer action.

From the opening whistle, Miami looked sharper, more confident, and far more dangerous in possession. Every meaningful attack seemed to flow through Messi, who was simply too clever for Portland’s back line to handle. The breakthrough arrived in the 31st minute after a slick passing sequence. Luis Suarez combined neatly with Telasco Segovia, whose smart flick sent Messi through on goal for a simple finish.

Not long after, Messi turned provider. Dancing past multiple defenders with ease, he slipped a perfect pass across the box for German Berterame, who calmly tapped home from close range to double Miami’s advantage.

While Miami’s attack grabbed the headlines, the defense quietly delivered one of its most disciplined performances of the season. Portland had spells of possession and pressure, especially early in the second half, but they rarely looked capable of seriously troubling the Herons’ back line. Miami stayed organized, protected their penalty area well, and comfortably secured a valuable clean sheet.

Portland showed flashes through Kris Velde and Kevin Kelsey, but clear-cut opportunities never truly arrived. And when Messi nearly added a stunning late free-kick, only a brilliant save prevented the scoreline from becoming even more convincing.

In the end, 2-0 felt like the right result. Portland were competitive without being threatening, while Miami looked mature, balanced, and in control throughout. Most importantly for the Herons, it marked their first home victory at Nu Stadium — and a performance that hinted at what this team can look like when everything clicks.

    Player Ratings

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Dayne St. Clair (7/10)
A calm evening overall. He was called into action a few times and handled everything comfortably while commanding his area well.

    Ian Fray (7/10)
Solid and dependable before being substituted at halftime. Rarely looked troubled defensively.

    Gonzalo Luján (7/10)
Kept things simple and effective. Positioned himself well and dealt with Portland’s attacks comfortably.

    Micael (8/10)
Possibly his strongest performance of the season so far. Aggressive in challenges, dominant in duels, and composed when playing out from the back.

    Sergio Reguilón (7/10)
Energetic down the left side and constantly involved. Balanced his defensive responsibilities nicely while still supporting the attack.

    Midfield

    Yannick Bright (7/10)
Worked tirelessly in midfield. Broke up play consistently and kept the ball moving efficiently.

    Rodrigo De Paul (7/10)
A performance filled with flashes of class. At times brilliant on the ball, though he occasionally invited pressure with loose touches.

    Telasco Segovia (8/10)
Outstanding work rate from start to finish. Covered huge areas of the pitch, linked play beautifully, and deserved his assist.

    Attack

    Lionel Messi (8/10)
The difference-maker once again. Scored one, created another, and dictated the game whenever he touched the ball. Pure quality in the first half.

    Luis Suárez (7/10)
Not at his sharpest in front of goal, but his link-up play was crucial. Played a key role in Miami’s opener.

    German Berterame (7/10)
Took his goal confidently and worked hard off the ball throughout the match. Capture messi
